Becta Social Media Ideas
Welcome to our official ideas forum for Becta employees to suggest ways in which we could use social media to communicate with our audiences, online users and stakeholders.
This forum provides a place for ideas and gives you the opportunity to vote and comment on those posted by others.
The ideas will go towards informing our corporate social media strategy, which Becta is developing with COI. Therefore your ideas and comments should be based upon use of social media in a business/professional context to support Becta’s business objectives.
This forum will close on April 19th 2010.
Please email tony.barker@becta.org.uk with any questions.
Thank you!
P.S. This forum is designed for Becta employees only and therefore should not be shared outside of Becta. In contributing to this forum please refer to the general guidelines for Becta employees using social media detailed in Becta’s Social Media Guidelines http://intranet/news/bectanews.aspx?id=2f824d05-dbea-41cb-9495-7d513eb62727

We should monitor and evaluate social media to keep track of what is being said about becta online.
It's an extension of business intelligence and media monitoring. The difference is that, the reports should be used to prompt engagement online with our users - both when they say positive and negative things about us. All staff should have access to the reports and be encouraged to review them.

using Shibboleth to make it easier for stakeholders to access our online services
Take-up of Simplified Sign On via the UK Access Management Federation for Education and Research is at a level where a large number of Becta’s stakeholders now have a federated username. By Shibbolising our key services not only will we be providing a more accessible way for stakeholders to engage with us, but we will also demonstrate that we can practice what we preach by following our own best practice guidance.

We need a clear set of policies on access to and acceptable use of social media sites
If we are to use social media more systematically, then we need to have a defined rights and corresponding responsibilities to protect reputations, data and our brand.

Social media works best when it is less formal and more fun than traditional media - can we do this?

We should have a permanent ideas forum running to gather suggestions from staff.
We could break it down in a number of ways - by team, by project, by subject area - but the forums should be viewable by all to encourage innovation.

Use JANET/Loughborough "reputation dashboard" to monitor social media - contact M.S.Cook@lboro.ac.uk
Loughborough Uni has developed a socila media monitoring dashboard for academic institutions, but it may be useful for Becta to monitor it's reputation, as it monitors many common areas.
